I'm really enjoying the current trend of birthday parties with a maximalist, colorful 'birthday' theme! This theme brings back all the nostalgic, whimsical aspects of the traditional birthday party. And for me, nothing says ‘birthday party’ quite like a traditional party hat or paper crown.
But we're not talking about the flimsy construction paper crowns of the 80s and 90s. Using Cardstock Warehouse paper means this crown will not only last through a kids birthday party and photo shoot, but can also be saved to use again or as a room decor item. Follow along to create this adorable paper crown, fit for the birthday queen or king!
Supplies:
- Cardstock Warehouse cardstock paper:
- Adhesives:
- Hole Punch
- Scissors
- Ribbon
- Cricut Cutting Machine
Begin your project by cutting all the birthday crown pieces in the linked Cricut file. All the images used for this project are available via Cricut Access. At this time, you can also customize any of the pieces to fit your theme. Customizing these crowns is so easy! Then gather the rest of your supplies needed to complete the crown, including a hole punch and some ribbon of your choosing.
For the first step, glue together the two crown base pieces using tape runner or liquid glue. I layered two pieces just for additional sturdiness. You could also choose a thicker cardstock, like Stardream or Colorplan, if you want to skip this step.

Next, it’s time to assemble the five birthday candles. This is where you can easily customize the paper crown with the recipient’s favorite colors or colors to match the rest of the party decor. Each candle is comprised of two pieces. Using liquid glue, attach the candle on top of the Lessebo Canary base with flame.

Using liquid glue, attach each of the candles to the paper crown base. You can utilize the points of the crown as a guide to align and glue each candle.
Next, attach each of the decorative stars to the paper crown using liquid glue. This was the perfect opportunity to incorporate some shimmer, using the Stardream Gold shade! I love the touch of shimmer and sparkle to support the celebratory occasion.

For the final step, punch a hole on each end of the completed paper crown. Cut a lengthy piece of ribbon in a color of your choosing and feed it through the cut holes. I chose a pretty gold ribbon to coordinate with the gold stars. I also curved my crown gently around a glass bottle (using it the way you would use a bone folder or dowel to curve smaller pieces) to give it a gentle curve so it doesn't crease when you tie it on.

This whimsical birthday crown is ready to party! I can picture it accompanied by some colorful (real) birthday candles and a fabulous birthday cake.
