One of my favorite things about the holidays is hosting parties or small gatherings. I’m the type of person that can’t throw just a “regular” party, and I love adding little details to things to make a big impact. For example these adorable poinsettia straw toppers. I"m making these in colors that will match the Christmas Candle Ring I made a few years ago.
Supplies:

- Straws
- Cricut Electronic Die Cutting Machine
This is a super easy project, because I wanted to show you how simple it is to take a Cricut image and use it as an embellishment for party goods. We’re going to jazz up some gold straws, but these same die cuts could adorn treat bags, cupcake toppers, place cards, banners, and more! I’ve also made mine Christmas-themed, but you can use any theme you like and find a die cutting image to match!
Let’s get started on the poinsettias. First cut out all the pieces. I cut the base leaves out of Marrs, the petals out of Flamingo and Bubblegum, and the little berries in the center out of Red Mirror. I love the little pop of shine this paper adds!
Once my pieces are cut, I like to separate the pieces into little piles to organize them. This makes assembly a bit easier.
To assemble the poinsettia, Take a Marrs Green base piece, place a dot of glue in the middle, and layer a dark pink petal on top, offsetting it a bit so the green layer still shows through. Then add another dot of glue, and add a light pink petal on top, offsetting this layer from the previous two layers. You should be able to see all the colors when you look at it from the top.
It was at this point that I remembered that I wanted to give all the petals a little pinch to give them some dimension. Oops! To pinch the petals, I gently squeeze them between my fingers until they crease a bit in a random spot. I don’t use a scoring tool for this, because I want them to look a bit more organic and random. I also went back and carefully pinched some of the petals I had already glued. It’s much easier to pinch them before you glue them, so don’t forget like I did!
Repeat the layers of petals until you have as many as you like. I liked the way two dark pink and one light pink layer looked together, but feel free to make yours however you like.
Once you have the amount of petals you want, it’s time to glue in the centers. I like to use foam pop dots for mine to make them stand out a bit, but you can also use liquid glue. Another idea is to use a ball tool to curve them a bit before you glue them.
The final step is to glue your poinsettias to the straws. (Or whatever you’ve decided to glue them to.) I like to use a paper straw and either use a hot glue or a sturdy glue to glue them on! Now you are ready to impress your guests with these adorable little details.
The Cricut file also includes the images for some Flamingo cupcake toppers with holly cupcake wrappers. I made these for a Christmas in July party that I threw with my girlfriends, and they were so fun! Everyone really loved them. My favorite thing about making party goods with Cardstock Warehouse paper is that I know my creations will stand up to being handled, and I can keep and reuse most of the elements. (But let’s not reuse the straws…mmmkay?) The poinsettia candle ring I mentioned at the beginning has been used the entire holiday season for three years in a row and still looks brand new!
