Honey Bear Handmade Card

Hello, friends! Today I’m excited to share a sweet-as-honey card project featuring one of my favorite techniques—ink smooshing. This Winnie-inspired card brings a warm and whimsical feel with layered die cuts, soft ink blending, and just a touch of playful texture. Let’s get started!

Materials:

Did you know the original Winnie-the-Pooh book characters are now in the public domain? That means you'll be seeing lots of new products from companies that are now allowed to use his original likeness. Fun fact: Pooh didn’t get his signature red shirt until 6 years after his original debut in the classic children’s book by A.A. Milne. In 1961, Disney acquired the rights to Pooh and dropped the hyphens from his name. Ok, enough of the history lesson, let's make this card!

To build the background, I used the ink smooshing technique with Distress Oxide in Tumbled Glass. I spritzed the ink with water on a smooth surface, lifted it with a piece of acetate, and gently pressed it onto a piece of vanilla cardstock. This creates a soft, organic splash of color—perfect for a dreamy, storybook feel.

Next, I die cut the bear, bee, and honey pot using cardstock in Bagdad Brown, Canary, Pitch Black, and Celeste. (The honey is cut from a piece of dark yellow from my scraps.) To give Winnie some extra dimension, I used a blending brush to softly add Mustard Seed Distress Ink over the yellow cardstock. This subtle shading really brings him to life!

I assembled all the die-cut pieces, layering them carefully and using foam tape to adhere Winnie to the background panel. This pop of dimension makes him the star of the show! The honey pot was added next with its delicious drips and a cute little bee buzzing nearby.

To finish the card, I matted the panel onto a piece of Gold Mirror cardstock for a touch of shine, then mounted it onto a top-folding kraft card base (4.25” x 5.5”). A few splatter accents and stitched-edge details bring it all together for a polished look.

Creating this Winnie the Pooh card reminded me why I love cardmaking—it’s about sharing love, laughter, and light through something handmade. I hope this project inspires you to revisit some of your favorite childhood characters in your next card. It is so fun when old characters enter the publ
