Print File Instructions

File Type and Size

FILE TYPE:  PDF

Press quality recommended

——————————————

MINIMUM RESOLUTIONS: 300 ppi / dpi

Make sure to provide high-resolution files for crisp imagery.

  • Original design files should be true high resolution before creating your pdf
  • Saving a low res file to a pdf or converting a low res file to 300 dpi before saving to a pdf will produce poor results

——————————————

MAX FILE SIZE: 2 GB

File Dimensions

< SEE PDF FILE ILLUSTRATION >

TRIM LINE

The trim line (blue line) is where your printed document will be cut down to. Trim Line dimensions should be the same as your finished document.

SAFE ZONE:

Safe zone (green line) should measure .125 inches (1/8 inch) in from Trim Line on all sides. Safe zone width and height are .25 inches (1/4 inch) smaller than trimmed file size. Text and images inside the safe zone will be printed on the final document. Items outside the safe zone will be trimmed off.

WHAT IS BLEED?

When your design prints to the very edge of the trim line (and looks like it runs off the page), it will require "bleed"( red zone). Bleed is the area of your design that extends .125 inches (1/8 inch) on all four sides of the document.

NO BLEED:

File dimensions are the same as the document size.

WITH BLEED:

Bleed should measure .125 inches (1/8 inch) on all sides. File width and height are .25 inches (1/4 inch) greater than trimmed file size. Less than a full bleed may result in an uneven design after trimming.

➡️add .25 inches to trimmed file size

DESIGN BORDERS:

  • Borders that extend to the end of the trimmed edge must be placed from inside the safe zone to the outside of bleed area.
  • Borders that do not extend from inside the safe zone through the bleed may result in an uneven border after trimming.
  • Borders placed inside the safe zone that are not meant to extend to the trimmed edge should print as designed

Ink Color Mode

COLOR: CMYK Required

  • Design file must be provided in CMYK color mode
  • Rich Black is recommended for solid black areas to prevent dullnes
  • CMYK for rich black is  C:30% / M:30% / Y:10% / K:100%
  • Solid Black is recommended for black text to prevent offsetting
  • CMYK for solid black is  C:0% / M:0% / Y:0% / K:100%

Font Sizes & Weights

FONT SIZES & WEIGHTS

  • Be careful using fonts that are too small. Anything smaller than 8 pt. may be difficult to read.
  • What is true about small fonts is also true of strokes and lines  that are very thin or light.
  • Small, thin and light fonts may look perfectly fine on your computer screen, but may not be the outcome you are looking for when printed. This is especially true if the ink color is lighter or the paper color is darker.

Fonts & Strokes

FONTS & STROKES:

  • Fonts must be embedded
  • Fonts that cannot be embedded must be outlined
  • Strokes must be outlined
  • IMPORTANT: Be sure to save your original file with (Live Fonts) separate and apart from the version (copy) you outlined for printing. If you save over your original document with the outlined version, you will no longer be able to edit the text layers.

Overprint

OVERPRINT:

  • Check your design in Overprint Preview to be sure it will print as expected
  • After opening your document in Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, go to the “View” menu, then select “Overprint Preview”. Turn the option on and off to see if there are any elements that are not going to print as expected.
  • If there are elements that do not appear in the Overprint Preview, then they will not print in the final printed design.
  • Adobe Illustrator - Overprinting
  • InDesign - Overprinting

White Ink Printing

White ink on colored paper or cardstock continues to be a popular design choice and the stunning results are easily achieved.

  • Why use solid-core colored paper? If your design has a darker colored background with white lettering or design elements, the alternative is to lay colored ink onto white paper. Using colored cardstock gives printed media and its design a custom look and feel that cannot be replicated by printing on white paper; and printed items finish with solid-colored edges (no white edges) for a high-quality appearance.

Pair with premium quality colored envelopes addressed in white to make a lasting first impression!

How to Design

Print White Ink on Colored Paper

  • Applications: Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, CorelDraw or any application that works for your print design.
  • For opaque white, create your design file using CMYK 100% black for all of your elements
  • CMYK for 100% black is  C:0, M:0, Y:0, K:100
  • Creating files in grayscale will cause the white ink to have gradations in opaqueness according to the amount of black in each shade. 100% black will produce 100% opaque white whereas a gray that is 50% black will have 50% of the opaqueness in white.
  • Be sure to follow all Design File Requirements
  • Save your design file
  • Save a copy of your file as a PDF. Be sure not to overwrite your original file.

Print Black/Colored Ink on Colored Paper using White Ink Underlayer

Printing color ink over a white ink underlayer preserves the ink color. For example, printing 100% cyan with a white ink underlayer on red paper produces a yellow print vs. an orange print without.

You can combine black, colored and white ink elements in the same design, so that the color ink elements will print with a white underlay, the white will print white, and 100% black prints without an underlayer.

This type of design on colored cardstock is best when the design is simple, allowing the beauty of the cardstock to breathe, otherwise you lose the benefit of printing on colored media.

The process requires a few extra steps.

Adobe Illustrator (AI)
  • Applications: Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, CorelDraw or any application that can specify a true white and works for your print design.
  • CMYK for 100% white is  C:0, M:0, Y:0, K:0
  • White must be 100% - no gradations
  • 100% black will print without a white ink underlayer
  • Create a new document sized to your media
  • Create a layer and fill it with a rectangle approximating the color of your intended media (paper) color.
  • Name the layer "Media" and under the "layer options", turn print off and lock the layer so this layer does not print.
  • Create a new layer named "Other Elements"
  • Begin creating your design; you may use colored and white swatches, as well as black if desired. The locked Media layer allows you to see those white elements as they'll appear on the printed piece.
  • Be sure to follow all Design File Requirements
  • Save your design
  • Export your file to PDF X-la.
